self-care myth no.1
You have to get your self-care practice "right" or else...
If you happen to be both a Perfectionist and a Creative, your approach to self-care may look like:
- A checklist of all the latest advances in health and wellness.
- A schedule of workouts and meditations and more that research show are the best things to do for your health.
- A strict diet and daily routine to make sure you get the most done on your creative projects each day and look good doing it.
And these are great places to start, but self-care isn't something to get "right."Â No matter how many ice baths or sauna visits you make, those practices don't get to the heart of that constant hum of dissatisfaction you hear in the silence.
And chile, I get it. You want to connect yourself, choose yourself and your creative potential. But adhering to rigid regimens can often be distractions and busy work keeping you away from your real self and overwhelmed in the process.
SO WHAT IF "RIGHT" DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT?
GO WITHIN TO LEARN WHAT FEELS "RIGHT"
If you're interested in nurturing yourself and expressing your raw creative potential more fully, try tapping into that creative genius of yours and get curious about what intutitively feels right.
Girl! I mean, that's your best creative project yet! Tuning into see what feels nurturing, what makes you feel at ease...what makes you feel healthy, what makes you feel supported...what makes you feel loved.
This is the place from which your creativity flows.
Another kicker is that your creative expression can be that "right" for you self care too. Yeah, like actually designing that landing page, or drawing that sketch, or even doodling or dancing can make you feel that sense of nurture you need and more.
That means your right-fit self care is only for you. No list of things from someone else can ever do for you what your own practices can.
And on that note: self-care timing, routine, and frequency is all up to you, your intuition, and your energy level in each and every moment. It's really smart to have a plan -- that gives you an idea of what your overall path is -- but don't skip over what's going on in the present moment just to stick to that plan. Allow yourself some flexibility so you don't snap or crash out.
self-care myth no. two
You're on the go 24/7 and you just don't have time to slow down and care for yourself the way you should
Being human in these here times is no joke. Whether you're single, married, living alone, or with roomies or your own kids -- in one way or another, we are really busy with surviving.
And on top of surviving, you have dreams and desires you want to make happen come hell or high water. Where does that lead? Well, it means endlessly busy days with not a moment to spare - sometimes not even for sleep.
You're burning the candle at both ends: getting the work done, making sure you eat well, taking the trips, taking care of the family. You're seeing positive outcomes, the fruits of your labor (bravo!) but the few calm and quiet moments you work so hard for don't even feel satisfying.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO SLOW DOWN ENOUGH FOR SELF-CARE?
SHIFT YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON SELF-CARE
As long as you consider self-care as yet another list of things to do, you'll likely be unsuccessful with implementing it in your life in a helpful way.
Even if you manage to check all the self-care boxes on your list, it's still not going to feel like something that feels nurturing, supportive, soft or loving.
So shift your perspective. You know that you need some TLC from yourself, now here's what you can do to get it:
- list out what you already tend to do for yourself that feels caring. Maybe you sit on the front porch for short breaks, maybe you take longer showers sometimes or maybe you chat with a friend or strengthen your boundaries around your "me" time.
With this list you can see the evidence that you indeed do take time to nurture yourself. Celebrate that - literally celebrate/acknowledge in some way - and lean into those practices even stronger.
self-care myth no. 3
Self-care is what you do to become more productive and resilient
You've got shit you have no choice but to do and you've got dreamy shit you want to do. And the truth of the matter is:Â to get it all done, you have to produce more and more and you have to bounce back quicker and quicker.
And you gotta get that everlasting energy from somewhere, right? And that's where a lot of folks end up placing self-care in their lives: as a means to do and be more and more. It becomes an act of self-sacrifice instead of one of self-nurture.
You find all the self-care hacks that boost your energy and increase your productivity and to toss aside the ones that take too long or preach all day about rest. You're definitely seeing benefits from the hacks but where is this all leading? B-b-b-burnout.
HOW DO I FIND THE ENERGY TO GET IT ALL DONE, THEN?
DO YOU REALLY NEED TO GET IT ALLLLL DONE? NOW?
Repeat after me: everything is not an emergency.
That buzzing sense of urgency is the underlying cause of not feeling productive enough, resilient enough, worthy enough.
You've got to become a master of prioritization. If everything is priority A, then nothing gets done. The needle just kinda stays in the middle - meanwhile your stress levels go through the roof because of it.
You've got to prioritize your general goals. Prioritize what actually gets done during the day. Even prioritize what happens each moment if you're that busy a person.
And with that, you have to allow and accept that everything won't get done. Because once you do, then you'll see that you can actually accomplish some things plus have necessary down time.
